Coriander
Frequently bought together
Why coriander seed tastes nothing like the herb
The fresh herb divides people. The dried seed does not: warm, slightly sweet, with a note of orange peel. Ground, it is the quiet base of curry powders and garam masala, and one of the oldest spices in the German kitchen.
The spice in your Sunday bread
Coriander, caraway, fennel, anise. One teaspoon per loaf, and the kitchen smells like a bakery.
The three places coriander hides
In the brine of every jar of Gewürzgurken. In the Lebkuchengewürz and in the Spekulatius at Christmas. And in the curry powder in your cupboard, where it is usually the largest ingredient. You have been eating coriander seed for years.
The history of coriander
Coriander is among the oldest spices on record. Seeds were found in Egyptian tombs, the Greeks and Romans cooked with it, and it travelled east along the trade routes to India, where it became a pillar of the cuisine. Charlemagne had it planted in the gardens of his estates, which is how it reached German monasteries.
